Kaj Riska


Kaj Riska - Senior ice engineer

Kaj Riska graduated from the Helsinki University of Technology in Naval Architecture. He worked at the Technical Research Centre of Finland from 1976 to 1988 as head of Arctic Marine Technology and then joined the Academy of Finland as a senior researcher.

From 1991 to 1996 he was the director of the Arctic Offshore Research Centre and then professor at Helsinki University of Technology before becoming head of ILS OY, in Helsinki, in 2005.

He joined Total Exploration & Production in 2012 as Senior Ice Engineer. He is an expert in the design of carriers for the Yamal LNG project on Arctic routes.

Kaj took part in the design of several ice-breakers (IB Varandey and Toboy) and of a frost-resistant FPSU in the bay of Bohai. He won the Total Exploration & Production prize for innovation in 2014.

  • Since August 2015, Kaj has been head of extreme cold within Exploration & Production’s R&D technological innovation platform.



  • He has contributed to many publications on the subject of boats and offshore structures operating in ice and some 50 of his articles are reference works for the scientific press.
